Why do Timelapses?
I get it, i have enough on my plate and since mid-July, I added another project. Timelapses. At 5:30 in the morning, I look out the window before I reach for my camera. If there are clouds, I set up the tripod and hope they’ll put on a show as the sun rises. It takes only a few minutes to set up and i leave it be as I get ready for work, check on the garden, give the cats their garden time while the camera record the timelapses. I have to remind myself to get the phone beofre leaving for work - I have forgotten a couple of times and have to turn back to get my phone. In the evening, I may do it all again, this time facing west to capture the sunset. Having that little moment to look forward to makes the day more fun.
Some mornings, I don’t even bother. Without clouds, one timelapse can look like a duplicate of the last: the same clear sky, the same sun moving through it. Clouds make the drama. They gather, break apart, catch the color, and turn a familiar view into something I haven’t seen before.
I would hate feeling stuck in the same day over and over feel as though I’m just slogging away. I work little blocks at a time of my projects - second edition of children’s book is almost done, writing in my website update regularly, a new canvas of the final painted edition gets another layer and more colors, the Salazar family tree is coming along, the cats are happy, and the garden is thriving. Sometimes it feels like I'm not getting anywhere but every so often I look back and see what those small stretches of time have made. Everything is coming around - even the timelapses which i feel is not even a project - it was just for fun. It has grown into a body of work, one short recording at a time. Each one now feels like an approval stamp at the endo of the day: one small thing done, move on the the next little thing, keep going and keep having fun creating.
